Meaning
Work in a house where one does not live; "our cook lives out; he can easily commute from his home".

Examples
- The housekeeper slept out, allowing her plenty of time to travel to her home each day for dinner.
- Since the family only required her services on weekdays, their nanny slept out during the rest of the week.
- Their live-in nanny had to be replaced as she got older and preferred to sleep out and commute to her new home instead.
- The company policy restricted staff from sleeping out except for those who had formally obtained permission from management.
- Due to work schedules and long working hours, one out of every five in-house employees was allowed to sleep out if a family member was available to accommodate them.
