Commutate (Verb)
Meaning
Reverse the direction of (an alternating electric current) each half cycle so as to produce a unidirectional current.
Classification
Verbs of size, temperature change, intensifying, etc..
Examples
- The use of a commutator in a DC generator serves to commutate the alternating current generated in the armature windings.
- In a direct current dynamo, the commutator commutates the alternating current at the center point of the rotation cycle.
- The rotary converter machine commutates the incoming AC power to DC output efficiently.
- By using carbon brushes on a DC motor, the motor can commutate and produce a constant DC output from AC supply.
- DC-turbogenerators usually have a high speed design that necessitates a highly efficient system to commutate the electrical current.
