Promote somebody by brevet, in the military.

- Following his bravery during the skirmish, the young officer was breveted to lieutenant colonel, a rank he would officially hold when peace was restored.
- General Smith breveted his most trusted aide to brigadier general, citing exceptional leadership in times of war.
- When the war broke out, Captain Brown was breveted to colonel, given command of an entire regiment.
- Lieutenant Davis was breveted to the rank of captain, but he would revert to his original rank when hostilities ceased.
