The grammatical relation between two words that have a common referent.

Nouns denoting relations between people or things or ideas.
Examples
- The pronoun "he" and the noun "John" exhibit coreference in the sentence "John said that he would attend the meeting."
- The words "the dog" and "it" have coreference in the sentence "The dog ran across the field, and it was having a great time."
- The phrase "the former CEO" and the proper noun "Smith" are in a relationship of coreference in the sentence "Smith was the CEO of the company, but the former CEO has since retired."
- In the sentence "Mary told him that he was being rude," "him" and "he" are in coreference with "John", who is implied but not explicitly mentioned.
